Mushroom coffee sounds like something an Instagram wellness influencer invented to sell supplements. And honestly, the marketing around adaptogenic mushrooms can be eye-rollingly over the top. But the actual science behind lion s mane, chaga, and ashwagandha for focus, energy, and stress reduction is more legit than you might expect. Spacegoods is one of the UK brands making them taste like something you would actually drink.
What Is Rainbow Dust
It is a powder blend containing lion s mane mushroom, chaga, cordyceps, ashwagandha, maca root, cacao, and a small amount of caffeine from green tea. You mix it with hot water, add it to coffee, or blend it into a smoothie. The idea is sustained energy and focus without the spike-and-crash cycle of regular coffee.
What It Actually Tastes Like
Chocolate. Not mushrooms. If nobody told you there were medicinal mushrooms in it, you would think it was a fancy hot chocolate mix. Mixed with hot water it is a pleasant, mildly chocolatey drink. Added to coffee it enriches the flavour without making it taste weird. In a smoothie you cannot taste it at all. The taste barrier that stops most people trying mushroom products does not apply here.
Does It Work
After two weeks of replacing my afternoon coffee with Rainbow Dust, I noticed I was not reaching for a third coffee at 2pm. The energy feels more even. Less of the jittery peak followed by an energy cliff. Whether that is the lion s mane, the ashwagandha, or simply the fact that I was consuming less caffeine overall is hard to isolate. But the subjective experience was noticeably different from my usual coffee pattern.
The research on lion s mane for cognitive function is promising but mostly in animal studies and small human trials. Ashwagandha has stronger evidence for stress reduction. Neither is a miracle drug. But as part of a general strategy to reduce caffeine dependence and support more consistent energy, the blend makes sense.
The Mum Angle
If you are breastfeeding, check with your midwife or GP before taking any adaptogenic supplements. The research on their safety during breastfeeding is limited. If you are not breastfeeding and you are looking for something to replace the afternoon coffee that makes you wired at bedtime, this is worth trying. One tub lasts about a month and costs less than a daily Starbucks habit.
