Subject Rotation Ideas
You don't have to cover every subject every day. Here are some rotation patterns used by experienced home educators:
Pattern A: Themed Days
- Monday: Maths + Science
- Tuesday: English/Writing + History
- Wednesday: Art + Music + Languages
- Thursday: Geography + Nature Study + PE
- Friday: Free choice / Project day / Outing
Pattern B: Morning Structure, Afternoon Freedom
- Every morning (9-11am): Maths + Reading/Writing (structured)
- Every afternoon: Child-led interests, creative play, outings, sports, practical life skills
Pattern C: Project-Based Blocks
- Weeks 1-3: Deep dive into one topic (e.g. Ancient Egypt, the human body, space, a specific country). Cover maths, reading, writing, science, art, and history through that one lens.
- Week 4: Review, consolidation, and choosing the next topic.
Pattern D: Charlotte Mason Daily Rhythm
- Morning: Short lessons (15-20 mins each) — maths, reading, copywork/dictation, narration
- Late morning: Nature walk or outdoor time (every day, all weather)
- Afternoon: Free reading, handicrafts, picture study, or composer study
Our recommendation: Start with Pattern B. It gives enough structure to feel like you're doing something, while leaving enough freedom for your child (and you) to breathe. Adjust after a month based on what works.
Daily Tracker
This is for recording what actually happened — not what you planned. It's your evidence file, your memory bank, and your proof that learning happened even on the days that felt chaotic.

Remember: "We baked a cake" covers maths (measuring, fractions, temperature), reading (recipe), science (chemical reactions, heat transfer), and life skills. "We went for a walk and found a dead bird" covers science (biology, decomposition), emotional literacy (death, cycles of life), and nature study. Learning doesn't always look like worksheets.
Monthly Reflection
Do this on the last day of each month. It takes 10 minutes and it's worth every second — both for your own peace of mind and as evidence for the LA if they ask.

How to Use This With the Local Authority
If the LA asks for evidence of your educational provision, your completed planners and reflections ARE your evidence. A monthly reflection showing what you covered, what resources you used, and how your child is developing is exactly what most LA officers are looking for.
You don't need to share everything. Pick your best month's tracker and reflection. Add a brief cover note explaining your educational approach. That's sufficient. You're not required to show lesson plans, mark schemes, or assessment data.
