Universal Credit April 2026: Every Change Affecting UK Families

April 2026 brings several significant changes to Universal Credit that directly affect UK families. Here’s what’s changing, what the new rates are, and what you need to check on your claim.

New Rates from April 2026

UC rates are uprated annually. The 2026/27 rates (in effect since 6 April 2026):

Rates are uprated every April, so confirm the current figures on gov.uk before relying on any of them.

Two-Child Limit Removal

The two-child limit on the child element of Universal Credit is being removed from April 2026. This means families with three or more children born after 6 April 2017 will now receive the child element for every child, not just the first two. If you have three or more children and weren’t receiving the child element for your third (or subsequent) child, check your claim — the additional payments should be applied automatically, but it’s worth verifying.

What to Check on Your Claim

  1. Are all your children listed? Log into your UC journal and check the household section.
  2. Has the child element been applied for all children? With the two-child limit lifted, every child should now attract a child element.
  3. Are you claiming everything you’re entitled to? Use the free benefits calculator at entitledto.co.uk.
  4. Childcare costs. UC covers up to 85% of childcare costs for eligible families. If you’re working, report your childcare costs via your journal.
  5. Housing element. If your rent has increased, report the new amount.

LCWRA Changes

If you have limited capability for work-related activity (LCWRA), your additional element remains in place. However, the Work Capability Assessment process has been under review. If you’ve had a WCA decision you disagree with, you have one month from the decision date to request a Mandatory Reconsideration.

Getting the Support You’re Entitled To

Many UK families miss out on benefits and support they’re entitled to simply because they don’t know they exist or think they won’t qualify. Use the free benefits calculator at entitledto.co.uk or turn2us.org.uk to check what you could be claiming. These calculators take about 10 minutes and are completely confidential.

Common questions

Has the two-child limit actually been scrapped?

Yes. The Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 18 March 2026 and took effect from 6 April 2026. The child element is now paid for every child in the household rather than only the first two. This is done, not proposed, and you do not need to wait for anything else to happen.

Do I need to do anything to get the extra child element?

No. The Department for Work and Pensions applies it automatically to existing claims. That said, it is worth logging into your journal and checking that every child is actually listed in the household section and that a child element is showing for each of them. Automatic is not the same as correct, and errors are much easier to fix early.

How much is the child element worth per child?

Around £3,650 a year in 2026/27, paid monthly. Rates are uprated each April, so check GOV.UK for the current figure rather than relying on any article, including this one. If you have three or more children and were previously capped at two, that is roughly what you should now see arriving for each additional child.

What if I disagree with a Work Capability Assessment decision?

You have one month from the date on the decision letter to ask for a Mandatory Reconsideration, which is the compulsory first step before any appeal. Put it in writing and keep a copy. Citizens Advice on 0800 144 8848 will help you word it, free, and they do this every day.
