A bedside crib clips onto your own bed so the baby sleeps right next to you, with one side that drops down. For the first few months it makes night feeds and settling far less of an upheaval, since you are not getting up and crossing the room each time. It suits newborns up to around six months, or until they can push up on their hands and knees.

What to look for

Our pick

This is a sturdy bedside crib with a lift-off bassinet, so you can carry the sleeping part around the house in the daytime. It has six height positions, a zip-down wall for easy reach, a gentle rocking function and a built-in incline mode. The breathable mattress and mesh liner help with airflow, and it meets the current British safety standard for bedside cribs. Good from birth until the baby starts sitting or pushing up, usually around six months.

It is one of the pricier cribs on the shelf, and plenty of cheaper bedside cribs do the same core job perfectly well. Buy this one for the build quality and the daytime portability, not because you feel you have to spend the most.
