Here is a quiet bit of school admin that is worth real money, and that thousands of eligible families skip every year because they misunderstand what it is for. If your child could qualify for benefits-related free school meals, you should register even if they take a packed lunch every day. Registering is not really about the lunch. It is about unlocking pupil premium funding for your child’s school, and a string of other perks for your family.
What is pupil premium?
Pupil premium is extra money the government gives schools for each disadvantaged pupil, to help close the attainment gap. For the 2025 to 2026 year it is worth:
- £1,515 a year for each eligible primary school pupil
- £1,075 a year for each eligible secondary school pupil
- £2,630 a year for children who are looked after or previously looked after
The bit most parents miss: the “Ever 6” rule
This is the part that makes registering so worthwhile. Once your child is recorded as eligible for free school meals, the school keeps receiving pupil premium for them for up to six years, even if your circumstances later improve and even if your child never once eats a school dinner. It is called “Ever 6”, meaning eligible at any point in the last six years.

Put plainly: a single registration for a primary-age child can be worth up to around £9,000 to their school over six years (£1,515 a year). That funding pays for things that benefit your child directly, from extra tutoring and reading support to trips and equipment.
Why register even if they take a packed lunch?
Plenty of children simply prefer a packed lunch, so parents reasonably think “there is no point registering.” But you are not signing up for the meal, you are switching on the funding. And registration often unlocks more besides: discounted or free school trips, help with music lessons, holiday activity places through the HAF scheme, and sometimes uniform support. Your child can still bring sandwiches every single day.
Who qualifies?
Eligibility is based on receiving certain benefits, most commonly Universal Credit below an income threshold. The good news for 2026: from the start of the September 2026 school year, every child in a Universal Credit household qualifies for free school meals in England, whatever you earn alongside it. That brings in around half a million more children. Full detail in our free school meals guide.
How to register, step by step
- Apply through your local council (search your council name plus “free school meals”, or use their online checker). It takes a few minutes.
- If you are found eligible, tell your child’s school so they can record it and claim the funding.
- That is it. Your child can keep their packed lunch, and the school gets the money.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child have to eat the school meal?
No. The pupil premium funding is triggered by your registration, not by your child taking a school dinner. Packed lunches are completely fine.
What if I earn slightly too much right now?
From September 2026 all Universal Credit households in England qualify, so it is worth checking even if you were turned down before.
Does registering cost me anything or affect my benefits?
No. It is free and it does not affect your benefits. It simply directs extra funding to your child’s school.
