Every UK Childcare Funding Option Explained (2026 Guide)

✓ Fact-checked 23 June 2026

Published 23 June 2026. Checked against GOV.UK on the day of publication. This applies to England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own childcare schemes.

Childcare is one of the biggest bills a family faces, and the help available is genuinely confusing because there are several separate schemes with different rules, run by different bits of government. Here is every option laid out plainly: who qualifies, what you actually get, and the 2026 figures. Work through it once and you may find you are leaving real money on the table.

1. Funded hours for working parents (up to 30 a week)

This is the big one. Since September 2025, eligible working parents in England can get 30 funded hours of childcare a week for children from the term after they turn 9 months old, right up until they start school.

To qualify, each parent (or the only parent in a single-parent home) usually needs to earn at least the equivalent of 16 hours a week at minimum wage (around £195 a week) and less than £100,000 adjusted net income a year. The 30 hours covers 38 weeks of the year (term time), though many providers let you “stretch” it over more weeks at fewer hours.

One honest catch: “funded” does not always mean entirely free. Providers can still charge for meals, nappies and extras, so ask for a full breakdown. You apply through GOV.UK / Childcare Choices, and there are deadlines: apply by 31 August for a September place, 31 December for January, 31 March for April.

2. Funded hours if you are not working or on a low income

3. Tax-Free Childcare

This one tops up what you pay. For every £8 you put into an online Tax-Free Childcare account, the government adds £2, up to £2,000 a year per child (or £4,000 for a disabled child). It is for working parents on a similar earnings test to the funded hours, and you use it to pay any registered provider, including after-school clubs and holiday camps.

Important: you cannot use Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as Universal Credit. You can, however, combine it with your funded hours.

4. The Universal Credit childcare element

If you claim Universal Credit and you are working, you can claim back up to 85% of your childcare costs, up to a maximum of £1,071.09 a month for one child or £1,836.16 a month for two or more (2026 to 2027 rates). For lower-income families this is usually the most generous route, and it can be paid upfront in some cases. Remember you cannot also hold a Tax-Free Childcare account while on Universal Credit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 30 funded hours and Tax-Free Childcare at the same time?

Yes. They are separate schemes and can be combined. What you cannot combine is Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit.

Is the childcare actually free?

The funded hours cover the childcare itself, but providers can charge for meals, nappies and consumables, so always ask for the full cost before you sign up.

How do I apply?

For funded hours and Tax-Free Childcare, apply through GOV.UK. For the Universal Credit childcare element, report your costs in your UC journal.

Once they are at school, the savings carry on: see our guides to free school meals from September 2026 and free holiday clubs through the HAF scheme, or browse the family life hub.
