Baby sleepwear is one of those categories where the price range is absurd. You can spend £5 on a Primark sleepsuit or £40+ on a premium sleep bag. The baby doesn’t care. But you might — because the quality difference is real, the safety standards matter, and anything that contributes to better sleep is worth investigating when you’re surviving on four hours a night.

Sleeping Stars is a UK-based baby sleepwear brand specialising in sleep bags, sleeping suits, and swaddles. Their products sit at the premium end of the market. We tested them against supermarket alternatives to see if the price difference is justified.

What Makes Premium Sleepwear Different

TOG rating accuracy. This is the big one. The TOG rating tells you how warm the sleep bag is, and getting it right matters for safe sleep. The Lullaby Trust recommends choosing the correct TOG for your room temperature. Premium brands like Sleeping Stars test their TOG ratings to international standards. Budget brands sometimes don’t — a “2.5 TOG” bag from an unknown brand might not actually be 2.5 TOG, which means your baby could be too hot or too cold.

Fabric quality is the second difference. Premium sleep bags use breathable, temperature-regulating fabrics that wick moisture. This matters because overheating is a risk factor for SIDS. Budget polyester sleep bags can trap heat. Organic cotton or bamboo blends breathe better and regulate temperature more effectively.

More on baby sleep

Are They Worth the Extra Money?

For a primary sleep bag that your baby wears every single night for 6-12 months, yes — paying more for accurate TOG ratings, breathable fabric, and robust zips is worth it. The cost per use on a £35 sleep bag worn nightly for 9 months is about 13p per night. A £10 supermarket bag that pills, shrinks, or has an inaccurate TOG rating isn’t actually cheaper if you have to replace it or if it doesn’t keep your baby at the right temperature.

For backup sleep bags, spare sets, and holiday packing — supermarket versions are fine. You don’t need four premium sleep bags. You need one or two good ones for daily use and a couple of spares that do the job.

Safe Sleep Reminders

Whatever sleepwear you choose, the safe sleep guidelines are: always put baby on their back, feet to the foot of the cot, no loose blankets or pillows, room temperature between 16-20°C, and choose the correct TOG for the room temperature. The Lullaby Trust website has a helpful room temperature guide that matches TOG ratings to degrees. Follow it — it’s evidence-based and could save your baby’s life.
