Warmies are microwavable plush toys filled with dried French lavender and natural grain. You heat them in the microwave for 60 seconds and they stay warm for up to 45 minutes. That’s the product description. Here’s the reality: they’ve become the single most-used item in our bedtime routine, and we now own four.

The Science Behind Why They Work

This isn’t just a cuddly toy that happens to be warm. There’s actual science here. Warmth activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest and digest” mode that calms the body and prepares it for sleep. Lavender has been shown in multiple studies to reduce cortisol levels and promote relaxation. And the weight of the toy (they’re heavier than a standard plush) provides gentle proprioceptive input, which is calming for children with sensory processing differences.

The combination of warmth, lavender scent, and weight creates a multi-sensory calming tool that works on a physiological level — not just a psychological one. It’s not magic. It’s biology.

Which Warmies for Which Age

For babies (12 months+, never unsupervised): Warmies Junior range — smaller, lighter, and designed for little hands. For toddlers (2-5): the standard Warmies animals are perfect. The sloth, dinosaur, and bunny are the bestsellers for a reason — they’re the right size to cuddle. For older children (5+): the Warmies Boots are surprisingly popular. Warm feet help the whole body relax, and kids who reject “babyish” cuddly toys still accept warm slippers. For adults: the Warmies Neck Wrap is genuinely useful for tension headaches, period pain, and the general aches of carrying small humans around all day.

Beyond Bedtime: Other Uses

Period pain. Growing pains (those 3am leg cramps that make your child scream). Anxiety before school or nursery. Car journeys where a toddler won’t settle. Comfort after vaccinations. Calm-down tool during meltdowns (offer it instead of trying to reason with a dysregulated child). We’ve used ours for all of these.

For neurodivergent children, the sensory combination of warmth, weight, and scent can be particularly effective. Several SEND parents in our community have told us Warmies are the one thing that consistently helps their child transition to sleep.

The Practical Stuff

Heating: 60 seconds in an 800W microwave. Don’t overheat them — they can get too hot and the grain can burn. Always check the temperature before giving to a child. Cleaning: spot clean only — you can’t put them in the washing machine because of the grain filling. The lavender scent fades over time but can be refreshed with a drop of lavender essential oil on the outside. Lifespan: ours have lasted over a year of nightly use with no issues. The stitching is solid and the filling hasn’t shifted.

Are They Worth £20-25?

A decent night’s sleep for your child — and therefore for you — is priceless. That sounds like a cliché, but when you’ve been up for the third night in a row because your toddler won’t settle, you will pay anything for something that works. Warmies work. Not every night, not for every child, but consistently enough that they’re worth trying. At £20-25, it’s the same price as a rubbish plastic toy they’ll ignore after a week. The Warmie gets used every single night.
