In a world drowning in plastic toys that break within a week and end up in landfill, PlayPress is doing something genuinely different. They make buildable playsets from recyclable, biodegradable cardboard sourced from sustainably managed forests in Finland. Designed and manufactured in the UK. No plastic, no batteries, no guilt.

We bought our first PlayPress set as a stocking filler, expecting it to last a day. That was eight months ago and it is still in regular rotation. Here is why these deceptively simple cardboard sets have become one of our most recommended toys.

What Makes PlayPress Different

The sets are flat-packed sheets of thick, sturdy cardboard. Children pop out the pieces and slot them together without glue, scissors, or adult intervention. The material they call Playboard is surprisingly robust. The fibres are bleach-free, the inks are vegetable-based, and the glues are vegan, biodegradable, and ocean-friendly. When your child eventually finishes with them, the whole thing goes in the recycling bin. Try doing that with a Lego set.

The sets come flat in minimal packaging. In fact, the packaging IS part of the product. There is almost zero waste. They are also lightweight and completely flat before assembly, which makes them perfect for travel. Throw one in a bag for a restaurant, train journey, or waiting room. They occupy a child for 20-30 minutes of building, then hours of imaginative play.

Best Sets by Age

For ages 4-6, the Farmyard and Dinosaur sets are brilliant starting points. Simple enough to build independently, detailed enough to spark imagination. For ages 6-8, the Space Station, Pirate Island, and RNLI Lifeboat sets are more complex with more pieces. For licensed character fans, they do The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, and Shaun the Sheep sets which are beautifully designed and faithful to the source material. For a first purchase, the Farmyard set is the safest bet. Every child responds to animals.

Gift Guide Essential

At 8 to 15 pounds per set, PlayPress hits the sweet spot for gifts. They are affordable enough for party bags, thoughtful enough for birthday presents, and small enough for stocking fillers. The mini sets at around 4 pounds each are perfect for advent calendars or party bag fillers that are not plastic tat. If you are looking for a gift that teaches fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and environmental responsibility while being genuinely fun, this is it.

The Home Education Angle

Each set is a jumping-off point for learning. The RNLI set leads to conversations about sea rescue, coastal geography, and water safety. The Space Station set opens up astronomy, physics, and engineering. The historical sets cover curriculum topics naturally. For home educating families, a 10 pound PlayPress set can fuel an entire project week without any planning.
