Keep it short and keep it consistent rather than saving it for evenings when you have energy. Ten reliable minutes beats an occasional half hour, and a fixed time your child can count on does more than the atmosphere does.
Let them move. Plenty of children listen better while drawing, fiddling or lying upside down, and insisting on stillness turns the one relaxing part of the day into another instruction. Listening is the bit that matters.
Follow the obsession rather than the reading list. A child who only wants books about sharks should be given more books about sharks. Range comes later, and it comes much faster once they believe books are for them.
